Transmisdion linkahe replaced to steering column yday now will not shift with brake on with key on..will shift with key off...help idk what it could be

Bought the van and had to hold shiftier cable with 2 hands and pull cable out to shift..replaced transmission linkage to steering wheel column day..automatic..and you can shift through gears when van is off..when its running I cannot get the shiftier lever to move at all..Im 54 or old female with some mechanical skills
