Temperature Gauge Fluctuates from real hot and then goes down, engine is not hot

What is your question?

I have a Chev 98 3500 Extended van. I have no leaking fluid, I changed the thermostate today and the temp gauge still is doing the same thing. I do have the check engine light on as it has been for a while. What do I do from here to further check. Could it be the coolant temperature sensor?

The coolant temp sender can effect the gauge but not the sensor. The code could be related to temp sensor. How have you determined that engine is not running hot or heat is not fluctuating even though you changed the thermostat? Has rad flow been checked for hot spots in rad core?
