It sounds like you are experiencing at least 2 different concerns. The starting issue is one thing - with the click and sometimes needing a jump start. For this, first ensure you have a known good battery that is fully charged and able to handle a sustained load. Testing of the battery will be needed to ensure this is the case. Once you are certain the battery is good and fully charged, testing will have to continue with wiring and cable connections to ensure everything is secure as it should be. If you still get a click after verifying all those things -- A starter draw test will help diagnose the starter as being a possible concern. As far as giving it gas to keep the engine from dying, as long as the battery and charging system is functioning properly, testing will need to focus on fuel delivery, ignition spark, and air to the intake manifold. There must be a problem in one of those areas that needs to be checked into. Good luck.
