Sometimes the starter needs a ground wire,( which is a BIG black wire that goes on a bell housing mounting bolt ) but usually they ground through the case of the starter touching the bell housing, which is grounded by the engine ground strap. As for the wires, there should be a small purple wire that goes to the small "S" terminal on the solenoid and then the large red wire goes to the very large terminal on the SOLENOID, not the motor. As for the other wire, it depends on what size it is. I know that it may be a bit late now, but before you take something apart, draw a picture or take a picture with your cell phone etc.
