The check engine light came on, it was diagnosed as a problem with the catalytic converter. The repair shop said one catalytic converter was bad and the other was on it's way to going bad. Our state, CA requires a smog check.
What makes this problem better or worse?

Hello, yes, you would have a catalytic converter for each "bank" of cylinders. You also have a 3rd "3-way" converter after each of those, in line, in the exhaust system. Unfortunately, in California you must replace converters with only new California certified catalytic converters. Which basically means -- dealership provided only. Good luck.
