What should we check, besides making sure its full of tranny fluid?

Car had slight hesitation during acceleration, I went to turn around and it wouldnt go in reverse, drove back home it had poor acceleration getting up to speed but did shift, parke it, got in it today reverse works again but wont engage in drive. Check engine light been on since we bought it two weeks ago.
