Hello, All BMW engines are designed to use BMW long-life synthetic engine oil, however, there are alternatives if this is not preferred. In your owners manual, there is a list of qualifications that oil must have in order to be considered safe for use in your vehicle. These qualifications must be met or exceeded by the oil you use, and oils list these qualifications on the bottle to assure compliance. There will be a little circle printed on the oil bottle that says "SAE" in the middle, and it will have the qualifications printed in or around that circle. Make sure they match the requirements in your owners manual. Also, your engine is designed for full synthetic oil, so none of the cheap stuff will do. Lastly, when in doubt, ask the employee at the parts counter. They can look up recommended oil types by make model and year, and ensure you get out the door with the proper type and grade. Many European manufacturers recommend Mobile 1 synthetic.
