why does the service engine light com on when you start the engine

the service light comes on about every other time you start the engine

If you are talking about the Service Light, do you also get a wrench icon as well? Because if you do, you may be due for a service. If you are not due for service, then your Service Reminder Function may need some attention, which is not uncommon on BMW
