My airconditioner every now and then decides not to blow cold. Is likely to be a faulty thermostat or does anyone know if there is a common fault?

Sounds like you do have a thermostatic valve fault. Try asking your local repair facility to check the amount of freon in the system first because low amounst of freon can cause similar symptoms. Good luck.
