Today I got an estimate from Audi for the exchange of the catalytic converter (driverside) of 4600,-, RepairPal estiamtes at max. 1193,- Can you name a mechanic who would the job for this money?

They are really overcharging you. Are you sure the estimate did not include other parts, 4pcs of O2 sensors, perhaps other parts? First, how many miles you have? Your car might covered under the 8years/80,000miles federal emission warranty, if not search the internet (perhaps this site for independent Audi/VW shops in your area.
