cant start my car in drive have2go from1st-3drive

What is your question?

I can drive perfectly fine once I have shifted into drive but once I stop I have to shift back down to 1st gear otherwise the car will not drive and it will just make a revving noise but not move unless I am in 1st gear then I will shift back into drive and be fine until I have to stop again. What would be the cause of this ?
