can a clutch cable fit on any car?

What is your question?

I own a 1998 audi a4 quattro, recently I had a problem with my clutch pedal. The pedal didn't come back up when I attempt to change gears. This allowed me to believe that the clutch cable is broken and I would like to know if I can buy a clutch cable and expect it to fit my car, or do I have to buy it made for my car?
