Rough shifting will only change gears for about 5min then stops moving unless I turn the vehicle off and on, then works for about another 5 minutes depending on if I can maintain the same speed, where do I start looking? Whining noise when it first starts up (cold).

Hey, I'm Dusty, and I'm part of RepairPal's Car Genius team! If you see the blinking "D" light on, it indicates that fault codes are stored, likely related to the transmission issues you've been experiencing. The symptoms indicate a significant transmission issue. The whining noise during cold starts could be a directly related problem. Here's where you can start looking: First, check the transmission fluid level and condition. Low or dirty fluid can cause shifting problems and whining noises. 1. Check the fluid level: Ensure the car is on a level surface and the engine is warmed up. Check the transmission fluid dipstick. The fluid should be at the correct level and reddish in color. If it's dark or has a burnt smell, it's time to replace it. 2. Fluid quality: If the fluid is dirty or burnt, drain and replace it with the filter. Using the correct type of fluid is crucial for your transmission's health. 3. Check for error codes: Use an OBD-II scanner to read any transmission-related trouble codes. These codes can give you a specific direction on where the problem might be, they're feedback that could lead to the culprit. Given the complexity of automatic transmissions, if you're uncomfortable performing these checks yourself or if the problem persists after these steps, it's a good idea to take your vehicle to a certified technician. They can perform a thorough diagnostic and repair to restore your RSX to smooth shifting. A professional will assess the transmission fluid level and condition, inspect the Transmission Control Module (TCM) for error codes, test the solenoids, and listen for any whining noises during diagnosis. If you're unsure about doing this yourself, it's best to consult a certified technician.
