I was told my timing chain/water pump should be changed due to age

I went in for oil change I was told my timing chain/water pump should be changed out becasue my car is 8 years old. It has 50k miles. I always though the rule was 100K. Any ideas? Is this a new thing? Also, they said cost is $2000+
