Problem overview

Some 2005 Mazda Tribute owners report experiencing issues with the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) illuminating due to multiple diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) related to coil-on-plug (COP) primary circuit faults, such as P0351 through P0356. These problems may arise from spark plugs generating radio frequency interference, which can potentially damage the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) and COPs. Additionally, some owners have noted that faulty ignition coils and spark plugs could lead to PCM damage, particularly in 2005 - 2006 Mazda Tribute models with a 2.3L engine. It is recommended that owners visually inspect the coil packs for burn marks, damage, and loose wire connectors, as well as check the wire harness for any signs of damage to address these concerns effectively.
