Ford Fusion shifter knob issue with slipping back to park and stiffness between neutral and drive on Ford Fusion

Problem overview

Some Ford Fusion owners report experiencing issues with the shifter knob, including slipping back to park and stiffness when shifting between neutral and drive. This problem is often linked to the selector knob locking solenoid, which can become stuck in the locked position due to overheating or insufficient voltage. Additionally, some 2017 Fusion vehicles may display a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) P0915, resulting in the vehicle being stuck in park and producing a buzzing noise from the rotary dial Gearshift Module (GSM). Owners have also reported difficulties with the gear shift sticking in park or reverse, often requiring force to shift out of park or experiencing stiffness when moving to drive. In more serious cases, a 'shift system fault - service required' message may appear, indicating a potential detachment of the shifter cable from the transmission due to a missing plastic retainer. If the transmission selector indicator is flashing, owners can use the override switch to shift from park to neutral for towing or to attempt to shift into the desired gear. It is recommended that affected owners consult with a Ford dealer or qualified mechanic for effective resolution of these shifter knob issues.
