Ford Edge loud noise on startup and idle due to defective flex plate and transmission components on Ford Edge

Problem overview

Some Ford Edge owners report experiencing loud noises on startup and idle, which may be attributed to a defective flexplate and transmission components. Specifically, those with 2015-2018 models often hear rattling noises from the back of the engine, likely caused by a cracked flexplate. Additionally, owners of 2.0L EcoBoost engine vehicles may notice a rattle at idle due to a flexplate crack around the crankshaft, necessitating the replacement of the flexplate, transmission fluid pump, and torque converter. Ford has confirmed that these noises are not related to adjustment issues and may stem from design characteristics of the variable valve timing. In some instances, the noise could also result from a defective return spring on the starter, which fails to fully retract the starter gear from the flywheel gear, leading to a rattle or knock noise near the transmission at idle. It is advisable for owners experiencing these issues to have their vehicles inspected by a qualified mechanic for proper diagnosis and repair.
