oil is leaking from area near oil filter
2 Replies
the oil pressure sending unit is there and is a common failure. look closely at the oil filter too. if it is still has the ould o ring from the other filter, it will cause a leak as well. Roy
Maybe same problem we had with ours, although it could just be a leaky sender. They bolt a steel plate on the side of those aluminum blocks with a gasket. The plate holds the oil filter and the fittings you might need if you are trailer-towing and want to add an oil-cooler. Anyhow mine started leaking a little at 230K so I snugged up the 10mm bolts around the plate. That stopped it awhile, but around 270K it started again, so it required the plate to be removed and the gasket replaced. I made my own because I wanted it thicker. Aluminum blocks expand & contract way more than cast iron. Its not such a hard job, just back your bolts out when the engine is still warm or you might need an air wrench to hammer them out. Dealer should stock the gasket if you don't want to fool with cutting your own.
