My heat is not working. The heat, ac knob is very hard to turn.

My heat seems to have quit working. This happened last year as well and I took it to garage and my temp knob was disconnected from something. The knob was very hard to turn and when I did turn it on for heat it just blew cold air.

What makes this problem better or worse?

It's worse when it's cold
