When I put my foot on the brake with no key in the ignition the dash lights up and door chime goes off. When the lights are on the 3rd brake light is on as a tail light, when I press the brake the lights all get brighter. This all is with the lights on manually. When the auto light sensor turns on the lights the dash lights go dim when i press the brake.

It sounds like you may have a problem with one of the rear light bulbs or sockets on your 2002 GMC Sierra causing the brake light circuit to be tied to the parking light circuit. One of the dual filament bulbs could be shorted across. Try removing one lower brake light bulb at a time and see if the problem goes away, if it does replace the bulb. If not you may have problem with one of the light sockets or the wiring.
