If the ignition switch won't turn, what might be wrong?

when the key is inserted into the ignition switch on my 2008 Mazda MX-5 Miata it will not turn. Obviously I can not start the car. I have tried jiggling the key, removing it and inserting it multiple times to no avail. I have assured myself that the gear shift is properly seated in the park position, and I have the brake depressed, still to no avail. What should I do next?
