I am getting a TCM fault and it turned out the battery is low. How can I determine that to alternator is not going bad

Car will not drive forward, only backward. Scanned and got a TCM fault. Trickle charged the battery and it was fine for a day of driving. I am thinking about getting a new battery but if the alternator is bad then there is now point.
