What is your question?
This is awful! Six months ago I had a complete "coolant exchange" done at Pep Boys (I know, my favorite mechanic was not available) it seemed like a good idea at the time. I have been having difficulties getting the emissions to pass and my favorite mechanic discovered that the radiator needed a new thermostat AND was full of rust!!! He said it looked like it was filled with water!!! And now I'm freaking out. Do I go back to Pep Boys (somebody please stop me!) and shake my fist in the air??? Ask for my $$$??? Ask for a whole new system to replace the rusted out one??? 😲 I wish my Dad was here for this one. HELP PLEEEASE!
How long has your 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee had this problem?

Your cooling system cannot possibly become rusty in 6 months. No one caused this to happen, it is likely caused by the 16 years the vehicle has been on the road and perhaps long term corrosion that has occurred during that time. Even if the radiator was filled with only water for 6 months, I do not see it causing "rust". Although not ideal, it's just not something that acts that quickly. Have the system flushed. Have the coolant replaced. Have the thermostat replaced. Recheck operation. Pass your emissions test (if that's all it needs) and monitor the system over time.
