how do I correct a fuel gauge that is on the wrong side of the stop peg

very likely you can move the needle with your finger to the other side of the peg.

While engine is off, take a strong magnet and work the needle counter clockwise until it is where it should be. Then turn car ignition to "on". The needle should go to proper level of gas. I have done it, and it works.
