Problem overview

Some Ford Mustang owners report experiencing fuel filling issues due to a manufacturing defect in the fuel tank design, particularly in the S-197 models and some 2005 vehicles built before April 26, 2005. These owners have noted difficulties in filling the tank, especially when the fuel level is above 1/4 tank, which can result in repeated shut-offs during refueling. Ford has acknowledged these problems and issued Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) 05-15-12 to address the slow or difficult filling of the fuel tank. The recommended remedy may include replacing the connecting hose neck from the tank to the filler inlet, and some owners have found success by turning the pump upside down. Additionally, visual inspections for issues such as a clogged vent tube or a malfunctioning check valve in the filler neck are advised to diagnose and potentially resolve these fuel filling concerns.
