2004 Volvo S60 90,000 mi,
when traveling over light bumps there is very noisy metal on metal and nashing sounds from passenger side .

under engine hood at the top of strut the the round part turns by hand .

Front struts are a real issue with the S60. I have a 2002 with 125,000 and just had the OEM struts installed a year ago by the dealer and they are already failing. The top of the strut is actually separating at the top and is visisble if you look at the strut tower from under the hood. My local repair shop reports actually seeing one break through the top and come through the hood. Dealer is telling me because the struts were put in 13 months ago they are now out of warranty. BEWARE: even the OEM struts will prematurely fail, not just the Chinese junk parts. Volvo knows about this problem and needs to take responsibility.
To address the question about replacement. When replacing the struts, the top caps must be done also to eliminate the rattle sound. Even with new struts and CV joints the front end will still make noise. The design is very poor and shifts using the struts as the pivot point, so failure is the only option.

2007 Volvo S60 60,000 mi,
Right front end speaking when going over rough pavement. Intensifies in cold weather. Almost gone in warm weather. No one able to diagnose it accurately. Must be the strut but what about all the assembly parts that are needed for repair?

Hit small pothole, rattling and crack noise. Now feels shakey

The front right strut on my vehicle actually protruded through strut mount and pierced the hood causing a dent and cracked paint. I fixed the problem by replacing the spring seat. Although that's fixed, I still have a dent and cracked paint!

only the passenger front Strut makes nose and in the cold. once warmed up nose is gone in weather 50< bellow 50 the nose will not go away.

This problem began a long time ago. I could hear a horrible grinding mostly coming from my passenger side. Jacked the car up to see the strut was ripped and not properly connected anymore. Replaced the strut myself. Terrible grinding stopped for awhile and same noise began on my driver side. Was pretty aggravated and still don't have time or money to currently fix it. Now when accelerating car shakes violently and does not steer well on highway. Husbands 1991 Honda Accord with 220,000 on it still has original working struts. Switching to Honda. Turns out I cannot afford this low level sedan.

2006 Volvo S60 96,000 mi,
Leaking front struts, broken spring seats, chassis setting sensor failure. Replaced front struts and they failed again after one year.

2005 Volvo S60 177,207 mi,
I recently purchased a used 2005 S60 2.5T.from a crook of a dealer. I've had it a month and I noticed the passenger side shock absorber top assembly sticking up about 2 inches above the cars support. I didn't notice it when I purchased the car, so I believe failure happened shortly after my purchase and had been long enough to damage the inside of the hood from where it was jack hammering the hood, it also has put the hood out of alignment, by raising it a half inch. You can visibly see this from side view.

I haven't taken it in yet, I jerry rigged it by placing 5/32 thick steel strips/straps from the 3 mounting bolts, over lapping and covering the top of the strut/s.a.
I'm going to have something fabricated professionally, that looks better. Mine was a quick fix which apparently will out preform the current strut/absorber configuration from what I'm reading here.

In less than two months, I've now experienced transmission issues, door lock entry issues, strut issues, passenger auto seat failure, passenger door lock assembly failure and a horrible tint job. Best $$$$$ I've ever spent.

Clunking noise on passenger side. Struts needed to be repaired. 1000

2002 Volvo S60 99,000 mi,
Driver side suspension made noise since I bought it at 94,000 miles, just discovered driver side strut bearing broken, strut poking through and scraping the hood. Passenger side bearing still intact but worn, will probably replace both.

Strut on my car is very loose if u push on my tire u can see it move

Same problem with struts. Vehicle handling was altered and thought it could be air pressure. Turned out it was struts needed to be replaced.

Struts replaced 2x already on two years . They push up on the caps and separate. I do not drive excessively. The third set lasted 2 weeks.

2008 Volvo S60 57,000 mi,
I'm having the same basic issue with the front passenger side NOISE when the ambient temp is on the chill side.
I was under the car inspecting all that I can get my hands on and did't find anything out of the ordinary, and this started about year and half ago, with such low millage on the car I think I'll replace the struts with softer ride come June.
