The emission control system of the vehicle is a group of components from multiple systems that work together to reduce the harmful environmental effects of using internal combustion engines. There are several other components at work, and several other advances in technology that have led to making our combustion engines more efficient. It should be understood that the main goal of the emissions system is primarily focused on increasing engine efficiency to prevent the emission of pollutants.
When does the Emission Control System need Inspection?
Any time there is an emissions fault the check engine light will be displayed. The purpose of the check engine light is to inform the driver that an emission related fault has been found, and that there are on-board diagnostic (OBD) trouble codes stored in the powertrain or engine control module. Additionally, since the emissions systems are so intertwined into engine control and transmission control systems, symptoms may include nearly any sort of drivability concerns. This may include harsh shifting, failure to shift, hesitation on acceleration, jerking, engine failure to start or run, loss of power, or any number of other drivability issues.

Emissions system components in many states will require repair before the vehicle can legally pass inspection or operate on public roads. In other states, the vehicle may only lose fuel mileage, operate poorly, or lose power. When the issue is related to the engine control system, diagnostics will take one of many paths, and the technician will need to identify a diagnostic method which is most likely to identify the problem in the most logical manner.

Correcting emission system issues may require a variety of procedures, but most repairs will require the diagnosis to be confirmed after the faulty component is removed in order to further prove the diagnosis.
