The ignition lock cylinder and ignition switch are two separate components. The lock cylinder is the portion that the key slides into and allows the ignition to turn. This is one of your vehicle's defenses against theft.

In most cases, the steering column plastic covers will be removed, and the ignition lock cylinder will be turned and released. A new cylinder will be installed, which usually will come with a new key.
