What is a clutch?
A clutch is used in cars with manual transmissions. It transfers the power from the engine to the transmission, allowing the wheels to turn.
How does the clutch work?
When the vehicle is in gear, power is transmitted from the engine through the clutch to the transmission. Pressing the clutch pedal disengages the clutch friction disc from the flywheel, momentarily disconnecting the engine from the transmission and allowing shifting between gears.
A failed clutch could either slip, shudder, or be unusually difficult to depress.
Engine oil or transmission fluid leaks can damage a clutch. When replacing a clutch, any leaks should be diagnosed and repaired to avoid recurring problems. As a preventive measure, it's not uncommon for a shop to recommend replacement of the rear main seal and/or the transmission input shaft seal even when not leaking—it's a good insurance policy against expensive future repairs.
What are the symptoms related to a bad clutch?
A
failed clutch could slip or shudder, or it could be unusually difficult to press the pedal. Changing gears may become more difficult. The engine will rev but speed will not increase or the vehicle may not move.
Can I drive with a clutch problem?
No, it's usually impossible to drive with a failed clutch. Even if the transmission can be put into gear, the worn clutch disc will not be able to transmit enough torque to move the vehicle.
How often do clutches need to be replaced?
Replacement intervals vary by vehicle and driving conditions. Similar to brake pads, clutches do not have a recommended replacement mileage. They do wear out, but some will last over 100,000 miles.
How are clutch issues diagnosed?
The technician will inspect the clutch hydraulics and clutch cable, if equipped. Shifting problems may arise from leaking clutch master cylinders, misadjusted clutch cables or worn pivot arms.
If other clutch issues have been ruled out, the transmission will be removed and the clutch, pressure plate and flywheel will be inspected and repaired as needed.
How is a clutch replaced?
The technician will remove the transmission or transaxle from the vehicle. The release bearing, pressure plate and clutch will then be removed from the engine. The flywheel may be removed for resurfacing or replacement, and the pilot bearing will be removed from the rear of the crankshaft. The new components will then be installed, and after assembly, the technician will check for proper operation.
Other considerations
Some shops may recommend that the Clutch Forks be replaced and or the Flywheel is resurfaced or replaced when the Clutch is replaced (where applicable). This will be in addition to the RepairPal price estimate.
