The teeth on the belt mesh with the crankshaft timing gear and camshaft timing gear. The belt is held tight by a tensioner to ensure the belt doesn't skip a tooth, or “jump time.” The timing belt may turn an additional gear for the water pump.

A worn timing belt can result in trouble codes from the camshaft or crankshaft sensors, causing a dashboard warning light to be lit.

The engine can make slapping or scraping noises if the timing belt is loose or worn. Adjustment may take care of the noise, but replacement may also be necessary.

Most timing belts will need to be replaced as part of regular maintenance every 60,000 to 100,000 miles, and most related problems are caused by not replacing it when you’re supposed to. If the timing belt is starting to go bad, the engine will run poorly and the check engine light will likely come on. Replacement involves removal of the timing belt cover and tensioner, the timing belt itself, and, finally the timing belt pulley. It may also be necessary for the motor mounts, engine cooling fans, radiator and other engine accessories to be removed. Installation requires that the proper amount of tension is applied to the timing belt and its related components. Once all the timing parts are back in place, the engine will be tested to make sure it's working right.

Failure of these parts can cause severe engine damage, just as if the timing belt broke, so don't pass on these items.
