Axle seals leaks are most commonly diagnosed by visual inspection. In cases where the cause of the leak cannot be pinpointed, dye or tracing powder can be used as an aid in locating the leak. Prior to replacing the seal, the axle shaft should be inspected for up/down movement in the housing. Excess movement would indicate worn internal components.
