Modern air conditioning systems, from the late 80's until now, have become more and more advanced in their ability to deliver comfort in a variety of ways to the passengers in vehicles. Not only can passengers control how much heat or cooling they receive, but they can receive both at the same time in different sections of the vehicle's interior. This calls for significant technology enhancements, one of which is the heating ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) air door actuator. These actuators respond when the controls for the HVAC system are moved, and cause the air of a desired temperature to come out of a desired vent.

When the controls on the air conditioner electronic (or vacuum controlled) controller are changed by the passenger, it controls the air door actuators. The HVAC air door actuators will respond to this input by following their programming, and changing the position of the air doors inside the HVAC ducts to accommodate the request of the passenger. On the other hand, there are many alternatives to repairing the HVAC air door actuators for many models of vehicles, but these will typically reduce functionality and require seasonal manual changes. The symptoms listed can be replicated by a broken blend door, blockage in the air ducts, or bad sealing foam pads where the blend door seats against.
