The teeth on the belt mesh with the crankshaft timing gear and camshaft timing gear. The belt is held tight by a tensioner to ensure the belt doesn't skip a tooth, or “jump time.” The timing belt may turn an additional gear for the water pump.

A worn timing belt can result in trouble codes from the camshaft or crankshaft sensors, causing a dashboard warning light to be lit.

The engine can make slapping or scraping noises if the timing belt is loose or worn. Adjustment may take care of the noise, but replacement may also be necessary.

Installation requires that the proper amount of tension is applied to the timing belt and its related components. Once all the timing parts are back in place, the engine will be tested to make sure it's working right.

Failure of these parts can cause severe engine damage, just as if the timing belt broke, so don't pass on these items.
