The diesel injection pump produces the high fuel pressure required by diesel fuel injectors. Its shaft rotates in time with the engine, allowing it to send a high pressure fuel pulse to each injector at the proper time.

The diesel injection pump, also called high pressure fuel pump (HPFP), is driven, on most vehicles, by the timing chain, timing belt, or timing gear. It receives slightly pressurized fuel from the fuel tank in a large volume, and attempts to compress the liquid, resulting in a moderate flow at an extremely high pressure. High pressure fuel pumps on diesel engines have incredibly long service lives. They tend to last between 100,000 and 150,000 miles, and repeat replacements are not typical. It is important that the fuel pump be periodically inspected for leaks, wear, shaft play, and metal shavings, as failure of the injection pump can send these metal shavings through the entire fuel system.

Reassembly is the reverse of removal, and if the pump failed, the system will be thoroughly inspected before allowing the vehicle to restart. 1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal
2. Remove any components that obstruct access to the injection pump
3. Disconnect all fuel lines and electrical connectors to the injector pump
