My water pump went & I replaced it. All was good! A few days later a awful noise started to come from what sounded like the pulley side of the engine. It sounds like it could be internal, but when I remove the serpentine belt there is no noise. I can rev it up & no thing, but put the belt back on & it's does it again. I replaced the power steering pump thinking it might be that causing the racket...didn't solve the problem. I am now thinking it might be internal like a push rod or connecting rod or??? Is it possible that the belt puts enough pressure on the crank to cause this? I have no oil leaks out the crank & don't seem to lack power but you'd think the way it sounds it was ready to blow up. Any ideas? I can spin the water pump freely when i have the belt off too.

3 possibilities. the alternator, spin it and see if there is any noise. the ac compressor front bearing. spin it too and see. the last is the harmonic balancer. it is a common failure that makes a heavy knocking noise. Roy
Checked alternator that's is good & was replaced last year...noise seems to be coming from further down. Ac compressor is good also. No change in sound when ac engages. Harmonic balancer is a definite possibility, but would that stop making noise with no belt on?
