Cooling fan runs abnormally

(1999 Mercury Grand Marquis)
in Brookton, ME on October 12, 2009

While driving Last week my service engine light came on. I then noticed that the cooling fan would come on, even when starting the car or driving only a short distance. Are the 2 related or do I have seperate problems?

Well, if the vehicle computer sees a problem with the signal it is getting from the engine temperature sensor, it could fail safe by turning on the fans and keeping them on. Or it could be that any number of DTC codes has caused the engine to enter "limp-home" mode, and would turn the fans on by default.

Go to your local parts house, most will scan codes for free, reply back with the DTCs you get, and we can discuss this issue further.
