It is the engine coolant temperature sensor, not a switch


http://repairpal.com/engine-coolant-temperature-sensor -> here is a link that describes it, however, there is a fan relay, and other things involved in the operation of your cooling fan. Does the fan come on if you turn on the A/C? Because it should.
