I've had this problem every fall for the past THREE years because heat / ac systems are not usually used in the summer time here in Newfoundland. After those several months of non-use the smell is always evident in the fall when heat starts to be used again. It takes several weeks of open windows and max heat until the musty smell is at least bearable.
This has been horrible. I wonder if it caused my chronic cough that is aggravated every time I start my car. I will follow up on disinfectant.
not fixed was told to put vents on high and turn of ac for a few minutes befor turning of engine to let fresh air come thru the system
