check engine light with no crank

My 97 Bonneville 3.8l just 3 days ago wouldn't start because of 0-10 degree weather. It did crank but acted like it was back firing 2-3 times and then threw check engine light and won't crank now, the battery has 12 volts, but won't even attempt to turn over engine. i rented a Autoscanner from Autozone and it says there are no codes stored. any help would be helpful.
