While driving my check engine light came on. Immediatelty after I tried to accelerate and the car sputtered and jerked as if it would cut out. It did not. However, I was only able to accelerate and maintain speed by very slowly pressing the gas in a slow and even fashion. If I tried to accelerate quickly it would sputter and jerk again

it sounds like you are expierencing missfires. have a pro look at it so you do not do damage to your cat converter. Roy
I am currently having my car fixed for the engine misfiring which, of course, is not coverend under the warranty.
Had similar issues and it turned out that the cam shaft sensor had to be replaced. Get the engine code checked at a shop if possible.
