Most shops, dealers and independents, have a fee for diagnosis. Sometimes that is included in the repair but more often than not they are seperate. The Check Engine light will have to be diagnosed before any repairs can be made. Sometimes it can be made in a short time but sometimes it takes hours to diagnose the problem and just a few minutes to repair. Your car will need to be looked at with a scan tool first and there could be a charge if it's not under the emissions warranty (some parts under this are 8 years or 80000 miles but most are 3/36000).
