I spent most of today trying to trouble shoot the same issue on my 2004 Chevrolet Crew Cab Z71 (5.3L). I had a friend bring a scanner over and all sensors checked out good. I experienced heavy misfiring on cylinder #1, light misfire on #3, #8, and 1,3,5,7 sparkplugs were covered with gas carbon. My exhaust was smoking black smoke like a diesel. Yesterday I filled my tank with gas at a small moms and pops gas station in the middle of nowhere. Today I changed the spark plugs and put 10 gallons of Exxon high octane along with 10oz of Lucas fuel treatment. It seems my problem is solved! I will change the fuel filter tomorrow, I'm running out of daylight today. I hope this helps someone out there. Also the tech at the Chevrolet Service Center said the ethanol is a major cause of fuel injector problems. Good luck to all!
hand held scanner says multiple misfire. I've changed 2 coils with no results.
