Worn Shift Bushings Will Cause Manual Transmission to Pop Out of Gear on Toyota Camry

Problem Description and Possible Solution

On vehicles with a manual transmission, worn shift bushings can cause the transmission to pop out of gear, especially when coasting down in 1st or 2nd gear. Replacing all the shift linkage bushings is pretty straight forward and not expensive and will commonly correct this concern.

popped out of gear twice and then the next day tried to downshift from 5th gear to 4th but had to force it out of gear like it was stuck.
the following day i tried to shift into 5th and it made a terrible loud gringing noise. wont drive in 5th to avoid any additional damage. all other gears work correctly
The control rod can slip off the bottom of the gear shifts ball joint anytime in any gear when driving. I removed the central console and pushed the control rod back into place one day on the way to the least 4 times. The plastic cylinder which appears to be the control rod bushing is worn.
