Clutch Replacement

How are clutch issues diagnosed?

The technician will inspect the clutch hydraulics and clutch cable, if equipped. Shifting problems may arise from leaking clutch master cylinders, misadjusted clutch cables or worn pivot arms. If other clutch issues have been ruled out, the transmission will be removed and the clutch, pressure plate and flywheel will be inspected and repaired as needed.
Clutch Replacement

How is a clutch replaced?

The technician will remove the transmission or transaxle from the vehicle. The release bearing, pressure plate and clutch will then be removed from the engine. The flywheel may be removed for resurfacing or replacement, and the pilot bearing will be removed from the rear of the crankshaft. The new components will then be installed, and after assembly, the technician will check for proper operation.

RepairPal recommendations for clutch issues

Engine oil or transmission fluid leaks can damage a clutch. When replacing the clutch, any leaks should be diagnosed and repaired to avoid recurring problems. As a preventive measure, it's not uncommon for a shop to recommend replacement of the rear main seal, the transmission input shaft seal, or other parts, even if they haven't failed. It's a good insurance policy against expensive future repairs. Also, when driving, avoid "riding" the clutch — that is, keeping your foot lightly on the pedal. Riding the clutch will wear it out more quickly.

Can I replace the clutch myself?

No, clutch replacement is a job for an experienced technician. Transmission removal is required, and special tools are often needed for removal and seating of the new clutch components.
