In the event of a crash necessitating air bag deployment, an inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants. An underinflated air bag may not properly protect the occupant, and increases the risk of serious injury or death.
The driver's frontal air bag is equipped with a non-azide air bag inflator (NADI) that does not contain phase stabilized ammonium nitrate propellant, which allows the inflators to absorb moisture resulting in the air bag deploying improperly in an accident. The inflator may also rupture, spraying metal fragments onto vehicle occupants. Dealers will replace the driver frontal air bag inflator with an alternative inflator when parts become available free of charge to resolve the concern.
Recall repairs on your Toyota must be performed by a Toyota dealership. Toyota will notify known owners of affected vehicles beginning in March, 2020. If you do not receive a notification, but wish to check to see if your vehicle is included, please contact one of your local Toyota dealerships. They will also check for any other incomplete recalls on your vehicle. For best results, be prepared to provide your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) to the service department consultant you speak with. The Toyota recall designations are 20TB01 and 20TA01.
