Recall 19V615000

Key May Be Removed When Shift Lever Is Not In The Park Position

Recall Details

A build up of silicate on the shift lever micro switch contacts may enable the ignition key to be removed from the ignition without the shift lever being in the park position. This can allow the vehicle to roll away unattended. Dealers will install an additional switch and circuit board free of charge to resolve the concern.

Our Quick Take

The ignition key may be able to be removed from the ignition cylinder even though the vehicle's shift lever may not be securely in the park position. This is due to a contact issue on a micro switch that may defeat the security mechanism that prevents key removal if the shift lever is not in the park position. If the shift lever is not in the park position, the vehicle could roll away unintentionally, resulting in an accident.

What Should You Do?

Recall repairs on your Volkswagen must be performed by a Volkswagen dealership. Volkswagen will notify known owners of affected vehicles beginning in October, 2019. If you do not receive a notification, but wish to check to see if your vehicle is included, please contact one of your local Volkswagen dealerships. They will also check for any other incomplete recalls on your vehicle. For best results, be prepared to provide your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) to the service department consultant you speak with. The Volkswagen recall number is 37M2.

Summary
Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2015-2019 GTI, 2015-2016 and 2018-2019 Golf, 2012-2019 Beetle and Beetle Convertible, 2017-2019 Golf SportWagen and 2011-2018 Jetta vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission, manual handbrake and keyless entry. A build-up of silicate on the shift lever micro switch contacts may enable the key to be removed from the ignition when the transmission shift lever is not in "Park."
Consequence
Removing the key while the shift lever is in a position other than "Park" increases the risk of an unintended vehicle rollaway that may result in personal injury or a crash.
Remedy
Volkswagen will notify owners, and dealers will install an additional switch and circuit board, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin October 11, 2019. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 37M2.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
