Newly Replaced Driver's Air Bag Inflator Ruptures During Deployment Spraying Metal Fragments

Recall Details

The driver's frontal air bag inflator may rupture on deployment, causing metal fragments to come through the air bag and injure occupants. Dealers will replace the driver's frontal air bag inflator free of charge to resolve the concern. Note this is the second time the driver's frontal air bag inflators are being replaced on affected vehicles, as the previously replaced parts are suspect for defect as well.

Our Quick Take

The driver's frontal air bag assembly is deployed by an inflator which contains propellant that makes the air bag deploy. This propellant may degrade over time, especially when exposed to humidity and temperature cycling. As a result, the inflator may rupture on deployment, which can send metal shrapnel through the air bag, striking vehicle occupants. This could result in serious injury or death. As a note, these inflators were already replaced one time previously, and are being recalled a second time, as the replacement inflators used as subject to similar concerns of failing.

What Should You Do?

Recall repairs on your Honda or Acura must be performed by a Honda or Acura dealership, respectively. American Honda will notify known owners of affected vehicles beginning in August, 2019. If you do not receive a notification, but wish to check to see if your vehicle is included, please contact one of your local Honda or Acura dealerships. They will also check for any other incomplete recalls on your vehicle. For best results, be prepared to provide your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) to the service department consultant you speak with. The Honda recall designations are Q5A and Y58.
