Tire Placard Lists Improper Spare Tire Inflation Pressure

Recall Details

The tire placard on the vehicle lists a tire pressure specification for the spare tire that exceeds the spare tire's actual pressure capacity. Dealers will overlay the tire placard with a proper one that lists corrected tire inflation information free of charge to resolve the concern.

Our Quick Take

The tire placard on the body of the vehicle lists proper sizes and inflation pressure of tires for use on the vehicle. The spare tire pressure specification listed exceeds the maximum pressure allowed per the side of the supplied spare tire. Therefore, the existing tire could be over-inflated, resulting in tire failure. This could result in an accident.

Potential Number of Units Affected
Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain model year 2016 Fiat 500 vehicles manufactured June 11, 2015, to July 27, 2016. The tire placard on the affected vehicles lists a tire inflation pressure for the spare tire that exceeds the maximum pressure listed on the sidewall. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 110, "Tire Selection and Rims."
If the spare tire is used while overinflated, the tire may suddenly fail, increasing the risk of a crash.
