Recall 16V215000

Passenger Frontal Air Bag Does Not Deploy In A Crash

Recall Details

The occupant classification system may not appropriately detect an occupant in the passenger front seat, and as a result will not power the passenger frontal and knee air bags for deployment in an accident. Dealers will re-calibrate the occupant classification system free of charge to resolve the concern.

Our Quick Take

The passenger frontal air bag and front passenger knee air bag may fail to deploy in an accident. This can occur due to the passenger seat occupant classification system not being properly calibrated, and may not detect a passenger present in the seat as appropriate. This would increase risk of occupant injury in an accident.

What Should You Do?

Recalls on your Toyota must be performed by a Toyota dealership. Toyota will begin notifying known owners of affected vehicles in May, 2016. If you do not receive a notification, but wish to check to see if your vehicle is included, please contact one of your local Toyota dealerships. They will also check for any other uncompleted recalls on your vehicle. For best results, be prepared to provide your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) to the service department consultant you speak with. The Toyota recall number is G0.

Summary
Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain model year 2016 Avalon and Camry vehicles manufactured November 30, 2015 to March 4, 2016. The occupant classification system (OCS) that activates or deactivates the front passenger seat air bag system may have been improperly calibrated. As a result, the front passenger air bag and the front passenger knee air bag may not deploy as intended in certain crash scenarios. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 208, "Occupant Crash Protection."
Consequence
Air bags that do not deploy as intended during a crash increase the risk of injury.
Remedy
Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will recalibrate the OCS, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin by May 31, 2016. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-888-270-9371. Toyota's number for this recall is G0J.
Notify
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
