If the bar and terminals are contacting each other at the time of a crash necessitating deployment of the driver's frontal air bag, that air bag will not deploy, increasing the driver's risk of injury.
The driver's front air bag has a shorting bar which may intermittently contact the air bag terminals. This would cause the air bag to not function as designed in an accident. Dealers will replace the steering wheel air bag coil free of charge to resolve the problem.
General Motors notified owners of affected vehicles starting in July 2014. You can check with your dealer to see if your vehicle is involved in this program. It is helpful to have your VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) on hand when you contact them.
